Pattypan squash seeds — little scallop-edged summer squash

Pattypans are the prettiest of the summer squashes — flat, scallop-edged little discs in white, yellow and pale green, picked young and tender straight off the plant. Botanically they sit within our wider gourds & squash range, alongside their soft-skinned cousins, and you'll find them among our full vegetable seeds. New to growing veg? Our vegetable growing guide covers everything from sowing to harvest.

Pick them small and they'll keep cropping for weeks — the more you cut, the more they set.

Why grow pattypans

Where a glut of marrows can overwhelm you, pattypans are picked baby-sized and stay manageable. Their firm, nutty flesh holds shape when roasted or stuffed, and the plants are mostly compact and bush-forming — a tidy choice next to other summer squash and easygoing enough for first-time growers eyeing our fast-growing vegetables.

Growing pattypan squash from seed

Sow indoors in late spring and plant out once frost has passed, into rich, well-fed soil in full sun — these are hungry, thirsty plants. Keep them watered at the roots and harvest little and often. The sowing calendar shows the right windows, and our germination guide helps the big seeds get away cleanly.

Short on space? Bush types crop happily in a large tub of rich compost on a sunny patio.
