Cucumis melo — melon

Cucumis melo is the botanical name for the melon, the fragrant, sweet-fleshed fruit that gathers cantaloupe, honeydew, galia and many more under a single species. It is the species behind our melon range within the fruit seed collection. New to fruit from seed? Our fruit growing guide covers the basics.

History & origin

The melon is an ancient crop with roots in Africa and Asia, carried along trade routes and refined over millennia into a remarkable diversity of types. Prized by the Romans and later perfected in the gardens of Renaissance Europe — the cantaloupe takes its name from Cantalupo, a papal estate near Rome — it became a byword for summer luxury.

The species name melo comes from the Greek and Latin for apple or round fruit; Cucumis is the classical Latin name for the cucumber, its close relative in the gourd family.

Botanical characteristics

A tender, trailing annual, the melon climbs or sprawls with tendrils and softly lobed leaves, carrying yellow flowers that ripen into round or oval fruit with sweet, perfumed flesh and netted, ribbed or smooth skin. A warmth-loving member of the gourd family, it sits naturally among our vining and climbing and culinary fruits.

Growing Cucumis melo from seed

Melons need warmth and a long season. Sow indoors in warmth in spring, grow on, and plant out only when nights are reliably mild — ideally in a greenhouse, tunnel or the warmest, most sheltered spot. Give rich soil, steady water and support or space to spread. Our fruit growing guide and fruit sowing calendar cover the timing.

What is Cucumis melo?
It is the botanical name for the melon, a single species that includes cantaloupe, honeydew, galia and many other sweet-fleshed types. Is melon hard to grow from seed?
It is rewarding but needs warmth. Sow indoors in spring and plant out only once nights are mild, ideally in a greenhouse, tunnel or sheltered sunny spot. When should I sow melon seed?
Start early under cover so plants have a long, warm season to ripen. See our fruit sowing calendar for the timing. Do melons need a greenhouse?
In cooler climates a greenhouse or tunnel gives the most reliable crop, though a very warm, sheltered spot outdoors can also succeed.
